Vintage Gator Bowl Program & Jacksonville NewspaperClick any image to see it full size
The 21ST Annual Gator Bowl took place on December 31, 1965 at Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville, FL. The game featured a matchup between Georgia Tech and Texas Tech. It was actually the second Gator Bowl Game of 1965; the first took place on January 2, 1965 between Florida State and Oklahoma. 19-year-old Sophomore Lenny Snow set a Gator Bowl record (which still stands) with 35 rushing attempts and picked up 136 yards as Bobby Dodd's Yellow Jackets bested the Red Raiders 31-21 in front of a capacity crowd of 60,127. The program is in great shape with minimal wear due to handling. The are a few blemishes on the front and back cover (see photos) and the Georgia Tech / Texas Tech roster card and page 3 have been torn out, but are still included (see photos). There are no creases or writing in the program and the colors are still vivid. The staples which bind the pages have started to rust a bit as well (see photos)In addition to the information about the game and teams involved, the program features old advertisments by American Heritage Life Insurance Company, Stuckeys (with a free coffee coupon), American Greyhound Track Operators, WJAX Radio, A&P Food Stores, Royal Crown Bottling Company, GW Steak House, Duval Federal Savings & Loan, Marineland of Florida, WJXT TV4 Newsnight, Caterpillar, Jacksonville Kennel Club, King Edward Cigar Company, Colonial Stores Inc., American Dairy Association, The Prudential Insurance Company of America and Coca Cola.As a bonus, I am including the January 1, 1966 edition of the Jacksonville Times - Union. The front page story feature the headline, "Georgia Tech Whips Texans 31-21 in GB". The paper appears to be complete, with each of its two sections intact. The top edge of the newspaper is somewhat tattered and the edges where the newspaper has been folded are worn, but the rest of the newspaper is in great condition. The newsprint has been discolored due to age, but is otherwise fine. The paper is not brittle and can easily be handled and read. These pieces will be an incredible addition to your collection!
