Rustic ribbed basket Appalachian melon style natural

Click on any photo above to see a detailed gallery Specifics 11 inches around 11 inches tall including handle handle and rim are twisted fruitwood (apple or pear) lashing is cane slab rattan ribs are Datu rattan balance of basket is woven in black hand-dyed vine rattan (most likely clematis) and iris leaves.The branches used in the handle and rim of this basket come from the historical estate where I teach basketry to children in a program for learning disabled kids. The estate was built in 1859 and many of the trees are historical or heritage varieties. This was either apple or pear wood or could be a combination of both. We got the piles mixed up, but I found them quite similar while twisting the rings for curing and storage. They have to be coiled into the ring shape while still green. These have cured for a couple of years and are through with settling and shrinking. It can be difficullt to shape a basket with natural gathered materials like fruitwood branches, so I used some special bamboo vines with a more consistent shape.. This medium large melon basket is beautifully balanced and sits up straight. I left the ends of the iris leaves sitting on the surface instead of cutting them off, because I think they look lovely that way, but they will eventually wear or break off. This is normal, so just enjoy while they last. It's something like cut flowers. The basket is large enough to serve many purposes and is perfect for a country decor or shabby chic.
